I was the photographer for this event. I have to tell you all this was the funniest thing to watch. It was Joel's job to hold Nathan down until they were ready to lift off. The wind was very inconsistent-too light for a long time and then whoosh, then gone again...
These two had never done this before, and under the instruction of Peter (the pro and tandem pilot) they all three had to run into the wind-if the wind catches, Peter jumps onto Nathan's backpack/chair where he can pull on the chords to control the wing. They managed to gain about 5 feet of air as Nathan kept his legs "running" in mid air like a cartoon, then crashed back into the ground (this is why he has to keep 'running' in case they come back down) Eventually they did get up in the air enough to clear the hill and landed in a wilderness boundary (?) provoking a ranger to reprimand Peter with a warning. Well, the next day we had better luck at a new site with better weather and all 3 of us got to take about a 10 minute ride. What an amazing elevated and peaceful feeling.
Thank you Peter for the wonderful experience, and I hope you are enjoying Life wherever you are-I believe you went to Germany...
